How is the symbol on the Spain flag connected to the extreme right? I always just assumed that was his personal thing somehow
Hi 👋👋👋👋
So the siluete on the flag Jorge carries is the Toro de Osborne (Osborne's bull).
This started as a publicity stunt and the siluete was put along some Spanish road. In fact, in some places it can still be see, not in Catalonia, where I'm from.
Somehow, that symbol started to pop up in flags and become a symbol of Spain's unity and crushing the unique identity of some Spanish areas (Catalonia, Basque Country and Galicia for example).
That unity is usually linked to the right (PP) and far/extrem right (Vox) in Spain. So basically a symbol that was mant to represent Spain become a symbol of the extreme right. I can't find any, but where there are right/extreme right demonstration or politic events this flag can be seen around.
It's true that is a personal choice, but so is what parties do you vote. I'm from Catalonia and if I see that flag in the street I know it's someone from Vox. I don't know if the flag holds the same meaning and have the same connotation in Madrid (where Jorge is from) because the right has more power and influence. It probably does, but the use is more widespread than in other areas.
It's okay to not know this because Spain is all about the bulls and bullfighting and one can assume it's just a non-official flag (and it kind of it), but in this case is kind of a display of his political believe. Don't quote me on him voting for the right (or extreme right), but he clearly is not a left voter.
Sorry for the info dumping in here

Spanish soccer fans sentenced to prison for racial abuse of Brazil striker Vinícius Júnior
Three supporters of Spain’s Valencia CF soccer club on Monday were sentenced to eight months in prison for racial abuse they inflicted upon Brazilian soccer star Vinícius Júnior during a match against Real Madrid last year.
A Spanish court found the fans guilty of crimes against moral integrity, aggravated by discriminatory racial motives.
The incident took place on May 21, 2023, during a La Liga match against Real Madrid in Valencia’s Mestalla Stadium.
The Brazilian forward celebrated the court’s sentence on social media:
“Many asked me to ignore it, and many others said my fight was in vain and that I should just ‘play football.’ But as I’ve always said, I’m not a victim of racism. I am a nemesis of racists,” Vinícius Júnior wrote on X. “This first criminal conviction in Spain’s history is not for me. It’s for all Black people. Let the other racists be afraid, ashamed, and hide in the shadows.”

Spain joins South Africa’s genocide ICJ case over Israel’s actions in Gaza
Spain has asked to intervene in South Africa’s genocide case against Israel’s actions in the Gaza Strip at the UN International Court of Justice (ICJ), AP News reports.
South Africa filed a lawsuit with the ICJ late last year alleging that Israel was violating the genocide convention in a military attack that destroyed large parts of Gaza.
The court ordered Israel to immediately halt the military offensive in the southern Gaza city of Rafah, but did not demand a ceasefire in the enclave. Israel has not complied with that demand and shows no sign of doing so. Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares said in Madrid:
“We take the decision because of the ongoing military operation in Gaza. We want peace to return to Gaza and the Middle East, and for that to happen we must all support the court.”
Mexico, Colombia, Nicaragua, Libya and the Palestinians are waiting for the UN International Court of Justice in The Hague, Netherlands, to grant their requests to join the case.
Israel denies it is committing genocide in its military operation to crush Hamas, triggered by its deadly attacks in southern Israel on October 7. The surprise Hamas attacks killed 1,200 people and took another 250 hostages. Israeli air and ground attacks have killed 36,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s health ministry.
By being admitted to the case, Spain will be able to file written submissions and speak at public hearings. Spain’s request is the latest move by the government of Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s government to support peace efforts in Gaza.

I can swear to you that what happens here in Spain with politicians is not normal: one kills himself, another runs away, and the one who everyone, including his grandparents in their graves, asks to resign, does not resign.

I really hope that all that is happening in this world will radicalise the young, but saying that as a radical myself, remember people come and go, it is never about one person. Its about systems and information, true or false. What is believed becomes reality, sadly enough.

sorry but wouldn't it be kinda stupid of jorge to use that flag? i mean if the majority of spain recognizes that flag as far right symbol it feels really weird that nobody on his team told him to change flag and use a regular spain one considering that motogp respects the different regions and uses the rights flags for their gps and also considering how the riders try to/have to appear apolitical
like it doesn't make sense for him to choose such a divisive and controversial symbol on tv, especially when he's trying to get picked by ducati, he doesn't need a scandal. could it be that he just doesn't know the meaning or is that impossible?
Hey Isabella 👋👋👋👋👋
The flag and the bull is a bit more complicated than see it and automatically far/extreme right. That bull as @babynflames ( https://www.tumblr.com/babynflames/750298627086417920/the-osborne-bull-first-appeared-next-to-spanish ) pointed out was used to represent Spain as a whole during the dictatorship. Some people, specially in the centre of Spain (mostly both Castilles and Madrid) see it just a Spanish symbol, where as I from the periphery and a region with strong nationalism feelings see it as another imposition.
That flag will mostly be displayed by the right and extreme right, but not all the people with it will be from that party. As I said to the anon before symbols that are so wide associated with Spain are not always seen okay in Catalonia, and therefore, Jorge who is from Madrid can see them a bit differently. Also Madrid has marketed themselves as the perfect spot for holidays for people from outside Spain, but in reality the right is winning.
That flag is the same one his parents have had since before Jorge was born and given to him as a present, a memento, for his first win so no one from his family will say anything. And anon pointed that his new friends and group is from that ideology, hence why they aren't going to discourage it. About the team? How can people from outside of Spain say anything when they don't know the meaning of it? True that he has Fonsi Nieto, but he's a white privilege man from Madrid living from his uncle's (not even his dad! He's actually the son of Ángel's sister) fame.
There also the fact that due to the political differences between the centre of Spain and the periphery of it, some people will actually be happy that they have someone carrying their same values as oposite as Aleix who is vocal about having his own Catalan identity. Jorge doesn't need to make himself marketable for the Catalan public, we already have Rins, The Márquez, the Espargarós, and Maverick. Jorge is catering himself for the Madrid (and centre of Spain) public, so yeah so will be extremely happy to see that flag.
Riders being apoliticals is actually a joke. I remember that a few years back the backlash Aleix and Pol got due to Aleix words (as always) because media interpreted Aleix was pro Catalan independence, when in reality he only said he was pro-choice. Rider are afraid to open their mouth some times, but they are actually allowed to say and do whatever they want. I don't know why DORNA and Carmelo allows that flag, unless they are actually okay with it.
Ducati already chose him using that flag. I started to watch MotoGP in 2020 and I remember him in parc Fermé in Moto2 with the flag and later that same year he was announce. Ducati can't care less. They will sweep it under the rug, but if people in the internet didn't know until I mentioned it yesterday, do you think Ducati have the time to check it?
The photo above is Jorge after winning his Moto3 championship and he's already displaying the flag with the bull's siluete.
It's true that is stupid of his part and he might not really know the meaning, but given that he has been liking VOX post and how how many of this flags are popping in their events is easy to put 2 and 2 together. At this point he is just refusing to learn the meaning of the flag or chooses to ignore it.
Sorry I feel like I went out of the tangent and I'm just dumping political stuff into your laps

Football Will Be Divided between Before and After the Conviction for Racist Attacks against Vini Jr., Experts Say
Fans who attacked the Brazilian with racist chants are sentenced to eight months in prison
A victory off the pitch deserves recognition among the achievements collected this year by the player Vinicius Junior. For the first time in the history of Spanish football, racist offenses have been condemned by the judiciary. The offenders are three Valencia fans who, on May 21 of last year, insulted the Real Madrid star during a game at the Mestalla Stadium, in the city of Valencia. They were sentenced to eight months in prison and banned from football for two years.
"This first conviction for racism in sports is a victory for football and for the entire Spanish society," says Juan José Ríos Zaldívar, a lawyer responsible for the procedural area of the Grant Thornton audit in Spain and a lecturer in courses on Law applied to football. "It's a historic event that divides the sport into a before and after," says Esteban Ibarra, president of the Movement against Intolerance – a Madrid-based NGO that closely follows the player's career.

Hi!! Not sure when you get election results, but I hope the best for your country 💕💕💕
I think we will get them around midnight/1am, but there was some delays and troubles with mail votes, so I don't know. (Documentation and ballets were not arriving to the voters, and then you have to send them back, so it's a pain in the ass).
I'll wait until tomorrows morning to say how it was and see what happened with the mail votes.
I don't care who wins at this rate, I just hope that the right and the extrem right (who is the continuation of Franco's regimen) don't get the enough seats to run Spain.
#Ask#Victoria's tag#Politics#Spanish politics#I'm still considering how it's possible a pro-Franco party is even allowed
